In October of 1963, eighteen women began meeting in Canton, Ohio to sing barbershop harmony. By July of 1964, they were up to twenty two members and became a chartered chapter of Sweet Adelines, Inc. They chose the name City of Flags Chorus because Canton, at that time, had just completed the flag lined Central Plaza, and the mayor and a reporter from the Canton Repository were trying to encourage all citizens to fly the national flag, not only on the holidays but every day, and to have Canton known as the “City of Flags.”
The chorus entered their first regional competition in 1966 and won their first regional competition in 1980 under the direction of Darryl Flinn. More first place wins came in 1987, 1990, 1995, 1997, and 1999 under the direction of David Wallace. At one point during this time, the chorus had as many as 130 members.
The chorus continues to this day to perform in regional competitions, annual shows, Christmas concerts, and various sing-outs throught the year.
